Chapter 12

Falcone and Bianca went to prison.

Sophia lost her seat on the Commission. She sent letters to the Caruso estate, but I never opened them.

Marco resigned from the Russo organization. The men who had laughed at my wedding lost their casino positions and their standing with the other families.

Vincent lost his title as Don and most of his business. His actions at the warehouse and his cooperation with investigators reduced his sentence, but the Commission barred him from power in Las Vegas.

Before he left the city, he asked to see me one last time.

He brought the platinum collar from the red room.

"I turned something meant to honor you into a tool to humiliate you."

I did not take it.

"Some things should not be repaired."

The collar was melted down. The metal became a group of plain pendants donated through a women's support fund.

One year later, I became the head of Caruso Atlantic. I began moving the family out of every illegal business that remained.

Luca and I held a second ceremony in the Belladonna chapel.

I did not wear the first dress. I did not invite the guests who had come to watch the Russo family display me. I approved every name on the list and designed my own gown.

The Russo crest had been removed from the chapel. My early platinum pattern covered the wall behind the altar.

Luca waited at the altar. The press found no fight to film, and the chapel doors stayed closed.

Before we entered the chapel, Luca asked the same question again.

"Are you certain this is what you want?"

I smiled at him.

"The first ceremony helped me leave Vincent. This ceremony is about choosing you."

In another city, Vincent watched the wedding on a television in a small bar.

He did not break the screen or come to stop us. He turned it off and sat alone until morning.

For ten years, he believed I would remain in place whenever he looked back.

He learned to look back after I had walked beyond his reach.

His punishment was not the time he spent on his knees or the blood he lost at the warehouse. He would spend the rest of his life knowing what he had destroyed with his own hands.

After the ceremony, Luca gave me our marriage certificate for safekeeping.

I remembered Vincent's promise from the red room. The wedding was supposed to be mine, while the legal marriage belonged to Bianca.

I placed the certificate in my safe. I also signed my name at the top of the Caruso and Moretti family agreements.

The wedding belonged to me.

The marriage belonged to me.

My career, my name, and my future belonged to me too.

I had spent years believing that love meant staying beside a man through every loss. Real love did not use my loyalty as a cage. It did not turn my support into permission to hurt me.

This time, I did not become a wife because a powerful man gave me a place.

I became whole on my own, and I chose the man who respected that truth.

The End
