Chapter 8
Confined to my hospital bed, I waited for two full days without hearing a single word from Donovan.
My nurse, Janet, breezed in with my lunch, laughing over some hospital gossip. "A CEO and his secretary got stuck together—they had to be wheeled into the ER on Christmas!"
She held up a tabloid, and my blood ran cold. It was Donovan and Chloe, clear as day.
I immediately called my private investigator, demanding every piece of evidence he had. Janet, more than happy to help me get even, handed over a crystal-clear video she had filmed of the pair arriving at the ER. I paid her ten thousand dollars on the spot.
Then, I called the police to file a domestic violence report and handed my lawyer the divorce papers. Donovan had no idea about the storm heading his way.
When he finally stumbled home, he found our wedding photos gone and every trace of our life together packed away. Furious and humiliated, he screamed my name.
"You called the police! You ruined me!"
Then his gaze dropped to my flat stomach, and all the color drained from his face.
"Elena… where's the baby?"
The man who had locked me away to die was finally about to face the truth he had ignored for three long days.
