Chapter 10
The One Who Had to Remember
Six months later, Elena’s condition had stabilized.
She still lost parts of her past, but an organized support system allowed her to work and live with independence.
She and Rowan opened a memory support program.
Patients could record medical choices, personal boundaries, and trusted contacts while they were still able to decide.
Dante sat in the last row at the opening event.
A recording of Elena played on the screen.
“Losing a memory does not erase a decision.”
“Forgetting why you said no does not turn that answer into yes.”
After the presentation, Rowan approached Elena.
“Would you still like to have dinner with me tonight?”
“I agreed yesterday.”
“Yesterday’s answer belonged to yesterday. I am asking you today.”
Elena smiled and linked her arm through his.
“Yes. I want to go today.”
As they passed the last row, Elena noticed Dante.
She stopped.
“Sir, have we met?”
The wedding ring was in Dante’s pocket.
He could tell her that they had been married for three years.
He could tell her that she had loved him for seven.
He could tell her that their marriage had contained real moments of care.
He remembered his promise.
“No.”
Elena gave him a polite smile.
“Then why do you look so sad?”
Dante held her gaze.
“I learned too late that love does not last when you keep wasting it.”
She did not understand.
She picked up a program booklet and offered it to him.
“This group also helps people who cannot move on from the past.”
Dante accepted it.
“Thank you.”
Elena returned to Rowan.
Rowan did not take her hand. He held his hand out and waited.
Elena placed her hand in his.
They left together.
Dante remained in his chair and opened the final recording Elena had left for him.
“Dante, forgetting you is not your punishment.”
“For me, forgetting is freedom.”
“I will not remember the nights I waited for you. I will not remember the pain of watching you choose Bianca.”
“Your punishment is that you will remember all of it.”
“You will remember that I loved you. You will remember that I wore another woman’s wedding dress and walked toward you.”
“You will also remember every time you left me behind.”
“When you finally learned how to love me, I had already forgotten your name.”
“You spent your life trying to become a man no one could replace.”
“Now you are the only person who must remember.”
The recording ended.
The event staff turned off the lights one row at a time.
Elena no longer remembered Dante.
Dante remembered every day they had shared.
That was the rest of his life.
