Chapter 14

"That would never happen." His jaw tightened. "I'd die before I let anyone touch her."

Before he finished, footsteps thundered down the hall behind us.

They were closing in.

I was shaking. "Get me out first. Once we're safe, I'll tell you everything."

He wasn't buying it. "You think you're in a position to negotiate with me?"

I closed my eyes and made up my mind.

"Your fiancée is—"

I didn't get to finish.

The men reached us.

Rio raised his gun and fought them off, one against many, still trying to keep me covered. But more kept coming, and he couldn't hold the line and watch me both.

A man in black leveled his gun at me.

I panicked and ran deeper into the garage.

My heel caught on loose gravel at the top of the stairs. My ankle twisted, sharp pain shooting up my leg.

I went down and couldn't get back up. Nowhere left to run.

The man in black walked toward me, gun raised, barrel pointed at my forehead.

My face went white. I froze, screaming, throwing my arm up to shield myself.

The shot never came.

I heard an engine roar. The man in front of me dropped.

Cole showed up out of nowhere.

"You're okay. I've got you."
